The house adjacent to the Van Tran Bridge is the homestead of Dr. John Mott—philanthropist, winner of the Nobel Peace Prize, and founder of the YMCA. Although the sign in the adjacent Livingston Manor Covered Bridge Park states that this bridge is listed in the State and National Registers of Historic Places, that is incorrect; to date, the Beaverkill Bridge is the only covered bridge in Sullivan County listed in the state and national registers. (NSPCB, Brainerd.)

On August 26, 1940, the Van Tran Bridge was damaged by a heavily loaded truck. The truck made an enormous hole in the decking as it plunged into the Willowemoc Creek. Repair costs came to $437.75 in materials and $174.80 in labor. Of the eight men who completed the repairs, working four 11-hour days, the top salary went to the truck driver who earned 80¢ per hour. Some of the other laborers made a mere 50¢ per hour. (Photograph by Raymond Brainerd; NSPCB.)
